Types of Wire EDM Machines

A Wire EDM machine uses a thin electrically charged wire as the electrode to cut precise profiles through electrically conductive materials. Controlled electrical discharges remove material without direct physical contact between the wire and the workpiece.

This non-contact process enables an EDM wire cut machine to process hardened metals, intricate contours, narrow slots and delicate components with minimal mechanical stress.

ESUNTEK offers three main Wire EDM configurations to meet different accuracy, surface finish, productivity and investment requirements.

Single-Pass Molybdenum Wire EDM Machines

A single-pass Wire EDM uses reciprocating molybdenum wire to complete the required profile in one cutting operation. The wire travels repeatedly between the wire drums and can be reused many times.

FAQ About Wire EDM Machines

What is a Wire EDM machine?

A Wire EDM machine is a precision machine tool that uses an electrically charged wire electrode to cut profiles through conductive materials. Material is removed through controlled electrical discharges rather than direct mechanical cutting.

Yes. EDM wire eroder and Wire EDM machine generally refer to the same type of equipment. The term “wire eroder” is commonly used in some European markets.

Molybdenum Wire EDM generally uses a reciprocating wire that can be reused for multiple machining cycles. Brass-wire EDM normally uses continuously fed wire that passes through the cutting area once before being discarded.

They differ in machine structure, dielectric system, automation, consumable cost, accuracy, surface finish and investment.

Single-pass Wire EDM completes the profile with one main cutting operation. Multi-pass Wire EDM performs a rough cut followed by one or more trimming cuts to improve accuracy and surface finish.

Wire EDM can cut electrically conductive materials such as hardened steel, stainless steel, carbide, titanium, aluminum, copper and nickel-based alloys.

Yes. Aluminum is electrically conductive and can be processed by Wire EDM. Appropriate discharge parameters, working fluid management and wire-system configuration are required for stable machining.

ESUNTEK can provide an aluminum cutting solution for applicable machine models.

A start hole is required for a closed internal profile because the wire must pass through the workpiece before cutting begins. A start hole may not be required when cutting inward from an outside edge.

Accuracy depends on machine configuration, workpiece thickness, material, wire condition, dielectric condition, environmental temperature, machining parameters and the number of trimming cuts.

Refer to the technical specification and test standard of the selected ESUNTEK model rather than applying one accuracy value to every machine.

Surface finish depends on machine type, power supply, wire system, workpiece material, thickness, dielectric condition and number of trimming cuts. Multi-cut machining generally provides a better finish than single-cut machining.

Select X and Y travel according to the maximum cutting profile, not only the outside dimensions of the workpiece. Also verify worktable dimensions, workpiece weight, thickness, fixture space and wire-path clearance.

Wire EDM machine prices depend on travel, machine structure, wire system, control configuration, accuracy, taper capability, automation and optional functions.
